About Us

We are a group of like minded local residents who have a love of nature and a willingness to get stuck in to help to conserve and improve our local nature reserve for the benefit of the wildlife that live there and to increase opportunities for nature lovers to enjoy getting close to wildlife in their natural habitat.

Work was first carried out more than seven years ago to create the ponds, wetland areas and pathways. This transformed the reserve, increasing the number and types of flora and fauna. Increasing the biodiversity thereby attracted more insect life, such as bees, damselflies, dragonflies, butterflies and moths. More insects in turn attract and provide food for newts, frogs and birds. Shelter for wildlife was installed, with log piles, multi storied amphibian/insect habitats, and nesting boxes for birds.

The group mainly exists now to keep a watchful eye on the reserve, doing jobs as and when needed. Examples are opportunistic litter-picking, clearing obstructions that are blocking the stream, contacting the council if a tree has fallen in such a way as to cause a hazard. We clear as much himalayan balsam as we can each spring, before flowering and seed-setting has taken place, in the hope of controlling this invasive weed. An information board at the entrance to the reserve on Bridge Street displays relevant plant, bird and insect identification guides.
