MBBCS Community Canals Project

A new community development project focused on the environments along the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal has been launched following the award of funding from Bolton CVS. The 12-month pilot project will bring together residents, community organisations like BGU members and landowners to begin reimagining the canal corridor through Darcy Lever, Little Lever, Kearsley and surrounding areas of Bolton.

Groundwork Greater Manchester is leading the project in partnership with Bolton at Home and the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal Society, who hold a shared belief that successful environmental and community projects are built on genuine collaboration and a common vision for positive change.

Planned activities include habitat surveys and wildlife recording along the canal, delivered by Groundwork with the Canal & River Trust and supported by volunteer wildlife safaris and citizen science initiatives. These activities are part funded by BGU. Guided walks and consultation events will help residents explore and celebrate the canal’s natural, cultural and historical heritage, while shaping future self-guided trails and improvement plans. The project will also explore the co-design and piloting of community facilities such as gardens, seating, picnic areas and interpretation boards that reflect local stories and ecological importance.

The initial phase of the project will also focus on a series of small, high-impact activities to empower the community, build local pride and gather the insight needed to shape ambitious, realistic and sustainable long-term improvements. Together, partners and residents will co-design and pilot activities that directly inform future investment in the area.
