BGU Grant F/back 2024 Jubilee House

Jubilee House Residents group | Monday 25 March 2024 | 0 Comments

We received a grant from Bolton at home of £300, and with the £200 BGU grant we have purchased an aluminium greenhouse, shelving, potting bench, post and compost

We have applied to the R4GM for the 1 tonne of compost, to use in our greenhouse and pots outside.

Our sheltered scheme is quite large, but the communal garden and areas for planting is quite small, with hanging baskets, pots and a few raised beds. There are no spaces to grow fruit and vegetable or to save us money to grow plants from seeds. We have purchased a greenhouse in order to do this, and to encourage more men to come out of their flats and to grow vegetables, flowers and fruit.

It has given some of the men in the scheme something to look forward to. They are excited about getting in the greenhouse and doing some ‘pottering’, growing some vegetables and tomatoes. There are also a few women who are looking forward to growing flowers too. We know that once we can start to grow things, we will put vegetables in the community room with an honesty box, and we know this will have a positive financial effect on our residents, as they will be able to take just a couple of tomatoes or carrots for example, instead of having to purchase a full punnet or bag. This will then help mental wellbeing.

We know that more men will use the greenhouse, and especially those who do not come into the communal lounge and attend activities, and this will create more of a feeling of community and neighbourhood.
