BGU Grant F'back BBFFC Volunteers
Bradshaw Brook Fly Fishing Club Volunteers | Tuesday 02 April 2024 | 0 Comments
Many thanks for the BGU grant
The funding will be spent on materials to control Invasive Non Native Species (INNS) in the Bradshaw valley
By reducing the Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam in the Bradshaw valley we are improving the biodiversity in the area and our zero tolerance of Giant Hogweed prevents the burn injuries that the sap of this plant regularly causes in the Irwell catchment.
The visible successful results from the INNS control activities in 2022, and the acknowledgement of that by all stakeholders, was very much appreciated by volunteers and definitely encouraged them to continue in 2023 and, hopefully, 2024. See attached before and after treatment photos from a stand of JKW in Bolton Arboretum.
Improving biodiversity is considered to be a great benefit to the community, as is the safety benefits, particularly for children, by elimination of Giant Hogweed
See the attached email from Vickey Egleston, the lady who owns the fields between Alders Lane and Bradshaw Brook:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank John and the team for the recent work that was undertaken to remove the Japanese Knotweed that has taken over on our river banking
From initial contact to propose the scheme and ongoing consultation of the task in hand the team did an excellent job in attending site over a number of days,
adhering to all security measures for accessing the land, relevant PPE and hazchem requirements and most importantly treating the problem areas effectively and with great success.
I’m extremely grateful for this initiative being offered to me and hope it can continue on so the weed is totally eradicated in the area.
Once again thanks for a job well done
Vickey
