Horwich’s brand new Health Centre is also a home for Swifts! When we discovered the new centre was being built next to an existing colony, we reached out to the Developer to ask if Swift accommodation could be incorporated. We were so pleased to finally get permission and Len Riley our ace volunteer and box maker designed 12 discreet boxes that are perfectly angled to fit under the deep eaves on the Victoria Road side. It is likely that House Sparrows or Great Tits will find the boxes before Swifts who can be slow to take up new accommodation but can be attracted by the presence of other birds. Protecting and expanding exisiting Swift colonies is one of the best ways we can save this wonderful species and help keep our skies alive with the sound of summer!
