Bickershaw Community Garden
Bickershaw Community Garden is located on Bickershaw Allotments and is an empty plot with around 10 different fruit trees. We are in the very early stages and the vision of the Garden is to develop 8-10 mini-themed gardens created by young people from the community.
We currently run weekly sessions for children aged 3 - 6 in the Garden. They do activities around nature and plant different fruit and vegetables with the goal of raising awareness about where our food comes from and helping them to connect with and care for the environment. The idea now is to change the experience into a project-based approach by developing themed gardens and splitting the Garden into different sections. The first project will start in June 2024 and will be to create a Wildlife Garden/Retreat, the sessions will be facilitated on a weekly basis for 6 weeks by Bickershaw Community Garden in collaboration with Westleigh Family Start Well Centre.
The initial goal of the Garden is to foster a project-based learning environment where young people think of, plan, develop, build and plant a unique natural space. We are in the very early stages and having initial conversations with a primary school and exploring whether Duke of Edinburgh groups would be interested. The benefits to the attendees of the sessions are fantastic and not only include raising awareness about the environment, nature and food but also foster a bounty of skills developed through completing the projects.
We see the development of the mini-themed gardens as the first stage of the journey. After the first stage, the goal is to ensure the Garden is an inclusive space that any groups from the community can use to do activities, enjoy the surroundings, do some planting, pruning, watering or whatever they so choose. It will be a completely unique space that has been created by young people for the community. We'll also look to have community days where we will do fruit pressing, food tasting, mini gardening workshops, etc.
We meet Weekly on Wednesdays between 1:30 and 2:30.
