Birtenshaw College
Birtenshaw College is part of Birtenshaw, a charitable organisation set up in the 1950’s to support disabled children. The organisation now provides education and care for children and young adults with special needs and disabilities. Birtenshaw College is registered as an Independent Specialist College.
Birtenshaw College provides specialist further education for learners aged between 16 and 25 with complex health needs and/or physical or severe and complex learning disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Conditions.
The College was established in 2014 in response to a lack of local further education opportunities for disabled young adults over the age of 19 who have difficulty in accessing mainstream college courses because of an unsuitable environment or the level of support they need.
Our specialist further education service was initially set up in collaboration with Bolton College with support from the local authority.
Birtenshaw College achieved independent status at the start of the academic year 2016 – 2017 which has enabled the college to offer a wider range of courses to a greater range of people, working with local authorities across the North West.
