Many thanks for the BGU grant. The application form was straightforward and the criteria and guidelines were very helpful.
Settle Street Allotments are very happy to receive this grant. The grant has been used to fund the hire of a skip to help clear the allotment site of general rubbish that accumulates on the site over the years. We run a tidy up weekend during May when the weather is a bit kinder. The event is run by the committee and is advertised to all plot holders, friends, and families. The event takes place over a weekend to allow people to fit some time in during other commitments.
Previous tidy up weekends have helped to improve a much-used local green space in the Great Lever Community, by getting rid of as much rubbish from the allotment site as possible. This has improved public safety by removing obstacles and hazardous materials from the allotment site allowing better access to the communal paths and areas on the site. The objectives for previous events have been derelict buildings removed, glass cleared from around the site, large items of plastic waste collected, and skips filled to the top with all manner of non-recyclable waste
In previous years the volunteers have felt a sense of achievement in helping the allotment site to be safer and look more attractive. Clearing derelict buildings helps to re-let vacant plots and gives great satisfaction to see a disused plot become productive again.
The wider community benefits as the site is more attractive and removing the waste from the site stops it from potentially being blown around the neighbouring streets.
In previous years there has been positive feedback from the nearby residents of Settle Street and the grant will allow us to continue the good work
