'Our back street' - Rock Avenue

Group Logo

Residents of Rock Avenue, Cloister St., and Raimond Street were upset by the regular fly tipping along their back street. Weeds also grew to waist high in places. It looked as if nobody owned it. We kept saying we would get around to doing something ... and we have.
A flier was posted through residents letterboxes and we have now had a few sessions involving about 8 to 10 neighbours, pulling up all the big weeds and slowly working our way up the back street to lift the other weeds from between the cobble sets.
We have bought or been donated a few plants and we have upcycled or found old plant containers. We dont want new containers or they are stolen . We have the start of a nice green alley/back street.
We want to continue to work with neighbours in rented properties, and the children to help people of different cultures to understand about recycling, keeping our area nice for children to play and to take some pride in it. We hope to involve the children in planting spring flowering bulbs.
This way people who live in short term rented properties will hopefully not fly tip in the street and passing vehicles might think twice.

We have made our own notices on back gates to remind people of security cameras and how penalties are imposed on fly tippers when there is evidence.

We hope that by involving the children they too will gain a love of nature and the environment.
We have made new friends and hopefully this will grow as our project moves up the back street.
