Harwood Community Hub is based in the grounds of Harwood Methodist Community Hall in Harwood, Bolton.
We are a small team of volunteers who started a book exchange for the local community at the start of lockdown 2020 due to the coronavirus. Since then we have grown into the "Community Hub" . People can bring books, jigsaws , toys, CDs , DVDs and bric-a-brac that they no longer require and these are recycled, by others taking , free of charge, what they can re-use.
This is a great way to recycle things you no longer need or swap books that you have read. During lockdown , when libraries were closed , the hub became a lifeline to so many in our community. People that wouldn't usually read or do jigsaws , took them from the hub during their daily walk and began to enjoy a new hobby.
The Grub Tub , for donations of non -perishable food supplies , is also outside each day and emptied by the volunteers. In the last few months we have been able to take bags and bags of food to Urban Outreach in Bolton , enabling many vulnerable and disadvantaged adults and young people to be supplied with the essentials they would otherwise have gone without.
Our small group opens and closes each day and ensures the hub and surrounding area is kept clean and tidy , providing a fantastic new resource and enhancing our local community.
We were so lucky to be featured in the "Bolton News" and honoured to receive letters of thanks from The Lord -Lieutenant of Greater Manchester on behalf of the Queen.
In August 2020 , with backing from the Church, we decided to raise money to purchase a permanent structure to enable the "Hub" to be a permanent fixture in Harwood. We have been overwhelmed with the generosity and many kind messages that we have received.
Harwood Hub is more than just a book exchange, it has helped so many , lifted the spirits of so many and is now a huge part of our community in Harwood.
