Harwood Litter Pickers
We wanted to encourage families to teach their children to respect our planet. Rob made 8 owls, Jane created the poem and family helped to put up the trail along the brook off Ruins Lane, Harwood.
We are a group of like minded locals who want to have a positive impact on our community in keeping it as litter free as possible. We have created a WhatsApp group to communicate intentions to pick, identify areas of concern, set dates and post results. We are flexible in how we work. Sometimes individually or in any size teams.
We clear litter from the streets of Harwood and Bradshaw on a weekly basis, maintain two community bins and support locals in clearing fly tipped waste. We have supported Eagley Junior school in setting up an after school litter picking group through a presentation and supervised their initial litter picks. They are now functioning in their own right with our help if requested.
The Oaks and Sharples Primary have also requested our input in setting up groups. So far they have been given my PowerPoint, ( Covid halted this)

Thanks so much for the grant from BGU.
We litterpick all over Harwood and beyond. In picking near to the Rockery opposite Roka restaurant on Bradshaw Brow we realised it had become as much of an eyesore as the litter. Action was taken.
We bought plants and shrubs were bought from two different nurseries: Holden Clough £68, Gill nurseries, Little Lever £117

The donation, so far has furnished us with 10 hoops and some graffiti remover. We have spent a total of £99.87
The local community really appreciate what we do to keep Harwood and Bradshaw looking tidy and litter free. The money has helped us to replace broken equipment but more importantly, provide new equipment for our new recruits. Picking with a hoop is so much more efficient increasing amount picked in time available. To my mind they are an essential. We have been able t More.....
We are more than litter.
We are stronger together: a team
We are guardians of green spaces
We step up when others walk away
We take action rather than deliberate
We understand community spirit
We believe actions speak louder than words
Over the last week, our village has been blighted by graffiti. I cannot remember, ever in 40 years, this happening on this scale. So Harwood Litter pickers came up with a plan, geared up and set to. It was rainy but Jane, Rob, Gilly and Kath are not easily put off. Protective goggles and gloves, remover and brushes, combined with determination and elbow grease did the trick. All that you see in the photos, has now been removed.
Whilst out picking in the rural lanes of Harwood and Bradshaw, Tony came across some thought provoking wall art. Tucked into gaps and crevices, in juxtaposition to ancient natural stone, was the stark contrast of man made plastic! Not only was this arranged for visual effect, but it perculated wafting strong, pungent aromas to waken the olfactory senses. Thankfully, being a man of taste the art was dismantled before it offended any unsuspecting ramblers in search of real and natural beauty. Be l More.....
What goes through the mind of a person who thinks a hollow tree which has fallen near my local brook, is a bin? Answers on a postcard.
Often, we are an invisible army clearing our neighbourhood of litter. I remember the first time I picked in Harwood on my own. Some people diverted their route while others avoided eye contact. I felt like an ASBO! How times change. Locals stop and chat and some have even joined the ranks. Last year we cleared 545 bags of rubbish and various fly tips.
As litter pickers, I know the reward is in having made a difference in spite of the hard work. So when a local shopkeeper, More.....
We are regularly finding our beautiful country lanes blighted by fly tipping. This is usually someone having paid a man with a van or weed growers dumping their waste.
