Bolton Council recently won the ‘Best Service Delivery’ category in the prestigious national LGC (Local Government Chronicle) Awards 2020.
Click here to read the article in the Bolton News, and click here to read the press release on the council website, which credit the huge contribution made by volunteer groups in the town by mentioning Bolton Green Umbrella.
Below are some extracts from the press release:
The annual awards, run by the Local Government Chronicle …. to recognise the best in innovation and service delivery….
The teams also work closely with Bolton Green Umbrella – an organisation set up in 2016, which co-ordinates and supports volunteer and community groups who pick up litter across the borough. More than 90 groups are now registered with Green Umbrella.
The judges said they were “hugely impressed” with the widespread community engagement and cultural transformation of the street cleaning and enforcement services.
They added: “This was backed up by an independent evaluation showing great return on investment.
Congratulations to Bolton Council on this award, and the voluntary groups registered on the BGU website have long agreed that this is a mutually beneficial relationship – Bolton Council need us, and we need Bolton Council.
BUT: sadly, a missed opportunity by Bolton Council to convey their thanks directly to BGU and all the registered groups! We only found out about this indirectly via the Bolton News article…. What a good PR exercise it would have been if senior officials in the council had drawn up a statement directly addressing the volunteers, thanking them and perhaps even making commitments for the future development of mutual working…. And let’s also note the reference above to “…showing great return on investment”. BGU have estimated that the work carried out regularly on public land via litterpicking and in parks, country parks, allotments, community gardens equates to 57 additional operatives! Which in turn equates to over £1 million per year!
One final point – Bolton Green Umbrella is not just the few “committee” members – it is all of you out there, who tirelessly work to make our town a better place and who are building communities and supporting one another. THANK-YOU!!
